While spreading GOSSIP may be best left to the Bards (See Also: AB SAGAS), any adventurer can easily tap into Sapience's thriving rumour mill by visiting locations perfect for eavesdropping (e.g., inns, taverns, etc.) and using the GOSSIP LISTEN command.

CONFIG GOSSIPNOTIFICATION will also give you a periodic reminder if there is important gossip you have not heard yet. 

Gossip slowly decays into gibberish over time and disappears from perception after approximately fourteen RL days. 

Truth? Lies? Who can tell? But it is always sure to be interesting!
